Lehman’s musical influences are crystal clear here. But rather than bowing to one genre at a time, the Montreal native displays a blend of soul, rock and jazz on each track. And he does a lot with a little, getting his groove on (“Pain Free,” “Paper”) and then getting intimate (“I Could Be”), all before this six-track EP runs its course.

One of the greatest things about working for the entertainment section of a student newspaper is the exposure to new music you wouldn’t otherwise hear.

Last week, a six track EP by Montreal-based artist Patrick Lehman landed in The Argus office. The press release states that Lehman was heavily influenced by “Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Fleetwood Mac, Lauryn Hill, [The] Fugees, Sly and the Family Stone, Bon Marley, The Rolling Stones, and Bill Withers.” The list of influences is evident in the sound that Lehman creates.

This simple album rolls slowly along to deep, soulful rhythms that don’t feel forced for the sake of creating a Soul genre album. The briefness of the album makes it feel altogether too short.

Lehman released an EP in 2006 to introduce himself to the music scene in Canada and The Electric Soul Kitchen Vol. 1 is his second offering. Big things can be expected from this artist based on the fluidity of the tunes and the quality of the vocals. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for some soulful jams made close to home.

Pourquoi donc se limiter à six pièces ? C’est la première question qui nous vient en tête aussitôt le mini album de Patrick Lehman consommé. Sans être des plus avant-gardistes, les sonorités présentes dans The Electric Soul Kitchen Vol. 1 sont musicalement très accrocheuses et arrivent à contaminer notre mémoire auditive avec une désarmante subtilité.

Le plaisir est au rendez-vous dès les premiers instants. Le disque du montréalais se présente comme une savoureuse communauté d’inspiration où se côtoient le soul, le gospel, le jazz, le R&B et le rock and roll. Les influences des Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, George Benson et Bob Marley sont très perceptibles tout au long des 24 minutes que dure ce trop court périple.

Intimes confessions

Les textes de Patrick Lehman ont été forgés à même les différentes relations humaines qui alimentent son existence. Que ce soit les sentiments amoureux (I Could Be, I Can See It In Your Eyes), la décision de ne plus souffrir (Pain Free), les frustrations concernant l’influence que l’argent a sur la vie des gens (Paper), la difficulté que les humains ont à se dire les vraies choses (Prove Myself to You) ou bien les introspections concernant l’avenir et l’urgence de poursuivre ses rêves (Ballad of Indecision), les chansons de l’auteur-compositeur-interprète se veulent avant tout des confessions intimes sur sa vie et sur celle de son entourage.

Celui qui rêve un jour de se produire sur la même scène que Stevie Wonder et Norah Jones s’est entouré de son complice, le percussionniste Cory Lacombe, pour mettre au monde The Electric Soul Kitchen Vol.1. Le guitariste Jonathan Rosner ainsi que les bassistes Roberto Tamboriello et Brian Choi ont aussi participé à l’aventure.

Un bagage musical bien fourni

Patrick Lehman a eu un parcours musical très intéressant. Immergé dans la musique dès son enfance, il a commencé à chanter à l’âge de 8 ans dans les églises. Une fois adolescent, il a même été membre d’un groupe de Hip-Hop. Par la suite, il a obtenu son diplôme en chant classique du Collège Vanier pour finalement poursuivre à l’Université Concordia, où il est devenu bachelier en musique. De plus, notons que le chanteur a eu le privilège de partager la scène avec Daniel Lanois, Colin James, Elvis Costello, Jamie Cullum et Ariane Moffat dans le cadre d’un concert-hommage à Paul Simon, devant 150 000 spectateurs, au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal en 2006.

The Electric Soul Kitchen Vol. 1 est un album sans artifices, bien produit et qui vous procurera un plaisir immédiat. Sans nécessairement réinventer le soul, Patrick Lehman se l’approprie avec aisance, tout en y apportant une touche personnelle qui ensoleillera avec une belle énergie nos dernières journées d’hiver.

Les chances de voir émerger cet artiste dans le paysage musical canadien au cours des prochaines années sont plus que probables, car le talent et la passion sont de toute évidence au rendez-vous. L’album, qui paraît sous étiquette Justin Time, sera disponible en magasin à partir du 8 mars.

With a degree in classical singing and holding a Bachelor in Music, Montreal's Patrick Lehman is primarily a music lover. His influences are very varied and range from gospel to rock 'n' roll, through soul, R&B, jazz, blues and even funk. In 2010, Lehman won the first place in the new artist contest over the Montreal International Festiblues, before signing a contract with Justin Time Records. He presents here a first EP with 5 songs plus an intro. On this recording, Lehman especially puts forward his classic soul influences, firmly supported by his voice filled with confidence. Diplômé en chant classique au collège Vanier et d’un baccalauréat en musique à l’Université Concordia, Patrick Lehman est profondément amoureux des musiques soul, gospel, R&B, jazz, rock and roll et blues. Ses influences musicales, aussi nombreuses que variées comprennent des artistes tels que Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, The Fugees, Sly and the Family Stone, Bob Marley, The Rolling Stones et Bill Withers.

Patrick Lehman and the Dropbeat Kings end my losing streak of not picking the contest winners. Their winnings include performing on the main stage at next year's FestiBlues. I've told you about Lehman and his various bands going back to when they were playing at Zeke's Gallery (Yes, I'm bragging). Congratulations guys.
... at the very least Lehman will be there next year, I will return.

La formation Patrick Lehman and the Dropbeat Kings repart grand gagnant du concours la Relève en blues édition 2010 du FestiBlues International de Montréal.

Le groupe est composé de musiciens de l'ouest de l'île de Montréal qui partagent leur amour de la musique soul, blues, funk et rock&roll.

«On est tellement content, je n'ai même pas de mot pour le dire, a lancé le chanteur et pianiste Patrick Lehman. On a participé à ce concours l'an passé. On était un des six groupes en demi-finale. Cette année, on était encore là et à la finale, on a gagné la première place. Ce qui m'allume le plus c'est de jouer sur la grande scène l'an prochain lors du FestiBlues.»

La formation lance son deuxième album à l'automne et voit d'un bon œil ce prix et toute la visibilité qui l'entoure.

Le FestiBlues Internationale de Montréal approche à grands pas et la relève qui y sera présente s'est précisé samedi soir dernier. Les groupes King Melrose, CAB et Patrick Lehman and the Dropbeat Kings se sont démarqués lors de la demi-finale du concours la Relève en Blues. Les trois demi-finalistes parmi les cinq en liste ont été choisis par le jury respectivement pour leur dynamisme, leur complicité et leur émotion qui se dégageaient sur la scène de la Maison de la culture Ahuntsic-Cartierville.

Le groupe Patrick Lehman and the Dropbeat kings, de l'ouest de l'île de Montréal, complète le choix du jury. La formation a partagé son amour pour la musique soul, blues, funk et rock and roll en présentant des pièces très rythmées. L'auteur, compositeur et interprète, Patrick Lehman, s'est dit très content de leur performance. Il a également souligné le grand espace sur la scène, qui était parfait pour les membres expressifs du groupe.

Twenty-four-year-old Patrick Lehman knew that organizing a fundraising concert would be part of his independent studies course this year at Concordia University.
But local musician didn’t know that the upcoming concert at which he and a collection of other West Island artists will perform, would turn out to be something so close to his heart.
The event slated to take place Nov. 27 at Clydes in Pointe Claire Village will benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec.
The organization is one to which, Lehman said, he feels eternally grateful.
His 54-year-old mother, Gisele Cormier, woke up early Aug. 14 with a sore arm and chest pain. But since she had suffered no other symptoms, he said, it took the family by surprise.
A long-time employee of Great West Life Insurance, Cormier survived after being rushed to Lakeshore General Hospital by ambulance and, transferred that same day to Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital where she underwent emergency triple bypass surgery.
Now, Lehman said, he wants to give something back to an organization dedicated to the education of Quebecers about heart disease and its risk factors.
Since the foundation was established 53 years ago, it has awarded more than $88 million to Quebec researchers to fight cardiovascular disease.
“I became much more aware when that all happened to my mom,” Lehman said.
In 2004, more than 72,000 Canadians died from cardiovascular disease, about 32 per cent of all deaths in Canada.
“They (the foundation) have played a big part in getting labels changed on foods,” Lehman said, “promoting healthy living.”
Although, he said, it’s unlikely she will be able to attend the concert, she is recovering nicely and happy about what he is doing.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I got to Cafe Campus, last friday night, in time to see only the second half of Lehman's set.In this case, it was doubly annoying because the band and the crowd were obviously on the same wavelength and the room was rockin'. Actually, that's not quite true. As I walked up the stairs I could hear a heavy duty blues-tune that sounded like one of the Alberts (King or Collins). Previous to this, I had not heard Lehman sound anything like a blues-band, so I assumed it was a recording or one of the other bands (You know the routine, never assume).
"Can't See My Baby Blues" is an exception to their usual mix of Pop and RnB. It is on the 'Pat Lehman Band' CD, which was released last year. It was a very pleasant surprise. It was more of an "authentic" blues sound than what I've heard from several groups recently, who are supposed to be blues bands. What I did see and hear was akin to the Dave Matthews Band or the Micheal McDonald-fronted Doobie Brothers and it was enough to make me regret missing the first half of the set.
